Before you call

What to have ready

You don’t need everything on this list to get in touch. Having some of it handy helps us understand your situation and point you in the right direction sooner.

  • A short summary of what has happenedA few sentences is enough to start.
  • Any dates or deadlinesFor example, a court date, a settlement date or a date in a letter you have received.
  • The names of the other people or organisations involvedFor example, the other party, a builder, a real estate agent or the executor of an estate.
  • Copies of key documentsSuch as a contract, a will, a letter you have received or court papers.
  • Photo identification if you are coming in to sign documentsWe may need to confirm your identity for some matters.

If someone in your family has died, a copy of the death certificate and the will (if you have them) will help. It’s fine if you don’t have these yet.

Costs

How our costs work

Every matter is different, so we don’t list fees on this page. You can ask us about costs when we first speak, before you decide anything.

If we can help, we give you a written estimate of costs before any work begins, and we tell you if that estimate needs to change.

Questions

Questions about getting in touch

Do I need an appointment to visit?

Please call (02) 9557 9000 or send an enquiry before you come in, so we can arrange a time and make sure the right person is available. Our office is open Monday to Friday, 9:00am to 5:00pm.

What should I do if my matter is urgent?

Call us on (02) 9557 9000 during office hours (Monday to Friday, 9:00am to 5:00pm) rather than using the form, and tell us about any deadline, such as a court date or a settlement date. If you or someone else is in danger, call Triple Zero (000).

Are there deadlines I should know about?

Some legal matters have strict time limits, so it’s worth getting advice early. Two common examples:

  • Family law property claims. If you were married, an application to the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia for property orders must generally be made within 12 months of your divorce becoming final. For a de facto relationship, the limit is generally two years from when the relationship ended. After that, you need the Court’s permission or the other party’s agreement, and the Court does not always give permission.
  • Claims on a deceased estate (family provision). In NSW, a claim must generally be made within 12 months of the date of death. A later claim can go ahead only if the Supreme Court allows it, which needs a sufficient reason, or if the parties to the case agree.

If you think a deadline may apply to you, please call us on (02) 9557 9000.

Can you help if I don’t live in the Inner West?

Yes. Our office is in Marrickville, and we act for clients across Sydney and NSW.

What happens to the details I send?

We use the details you send us to respond to your enquiry. Our privacy policy explains how we collect, use and protect personal information.

You don’t need to include sensitive details in the form. We’ll ask for what we need when we speak with you.

General information only

This page is general information only and is not legal advice. Contacting us, or sending us information, does not by itself make you a client of CM Lawyers. If we agree to act for you, we will confirm this in writing.
